Acceptance from a DLI: Prospective students must have an acceptance letter from a recognized DLI in Canada.
Financial Capacity: Candidates need to demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation.
No Criminal Record: Applicants must provide a police certificate to verify they have no criminal record.
Health Clearance: A medical examination may be required to ensure the applicant’s health is not a risk to the public health system in Canada.
Compliance with Immigration Laws: The applicant must convince immigration officials that they will leave Canada upon completion of their studies.
Application Process:
The procedure for obtaining a study permit involves several steps:
Acceptance Letter from DLI: Secure admission to a Canadian DLI and obtain the acceptance letter.
Gather Necessary Documents: Collect all required documents, including a valid passport, proof of funds, and a medical exam, if necessary.
Online Application Submission: Complete the online application or submit a paper application to the nearest visa application center (VAC) or the Canadian embassy.
Biometrics and Interview: Depending on your nationality, you may need to provide biometrics and attend an interview.
Wait for Processing: The processing time can vary, so applicants should submit their application well in advance of their intended study start date.
Notification of Decision: Once processed, applicants will be notified of the decision on their study permit application.
Extending the Study Permit:
If a student decides to continue their education in Canada or extend their study period, they must apply for a study permit extension. This application should be initiated at least 30 days before the current permit expires.
Compliance and Obligations:
Study permit holders must comply with several obligations:
Maintain Full-Time Student Status: Enroll in and actively participate in a full-time academic, vocational, or professional training program.
Keep Valid Documents: Ensure that their study permit, passport, and any other relevant documents remain valid throughout their stay.
Report Changes: Report any changes in their program, institution, or address to the immigration authorities.
Leave Canada After Studies: Depart from Canada within 90 days after completing their studies, unless they obtain another valid immigration status.
